Business is about helping people. But at the same time it is so much more than that.
Sure we get into it to follow a passion, make money, create our own utopia… but along the way we lose direction or our path.
Like a dusty trail out when hiking – the path suddenly gets less defined and harder to trace where exactly to head and the end destination seems in the distant future.
Entrepreneurs love getting lost in their head. As creatives with passion and a BIG dream, we look for something MORE in life.
A connection, a why.
Back to helping people … doing that by inspiring, influencing and motivation is a powerful was of actually helping.
It is not about doing the work for them. Give a man a fish and he eats for one day, teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime.
Give someone the answer or teach someone how to find the answer for themselves.
Because the answer is within. And always has been and always will be. Keep reading to the bottom where I share my why.
How To Find Your WHY.
Journaling.
Nearly every single day. That whatever is in my head needs to come out. And I KNOW I can help people this way. How?
By inspiring, influencing and motivating someone to take action.
To come to an answer.
To think outside the square.
To take a step back.
To look from another direction.
Routine.
I force myself to cement new routines and that was what I did for journaling. I get up at 6am, coffee, 10 minutes of exercise and THEN journal.
Before emails, before social media, before that To Do list. (This is important).
Because first thing in the morning is the best time to journal. And it needs to be a priority.
It might start with a blank screen and you feel like you are forcing it out. Start typing. Because just by making yourself start tying a couple of sentences it WILL start to flow. I don’t always ‘feel’ like journaling, but that isn’t the point. I can’t come to an answer without writing it out.
You should be in my head. The debates, the psychological conversations, the wisdom, the teachings that go on in there.
I do have something to say.
I do have something to share.
I do have experience that can help another person.
I do have a truth that needs to be heard.
I do have so much to give.
So do you.
Journaling or writing out what is in my head is my business strategy. Because we are all human and business isn’t ACTUALLY about business.
It is about the behind-the-scene stuff, it is about life, kids, health and how it is all connected.
And what is going on in my head and my life. You might understand. And resonate with. You might feel less alone and connected to me in a different way.
Multi-purpose that Journal.
That journal becomes a blog post, social media status, an email newsletter and also a chapter in a book. Sometimes it is a sales page.
That is your To Do list (virtually) done and all sewn up. Plus you are helping people, building a relationship, providing value and it is green juice for your soul.
People have said to me ‘what are you doing inside my head?’ when reading my journal. (I have heard this dozens of times).
And that is from literally forcing myself to sit, breathe and let what comes out my fingers what I am thinking about in that minute.
Because there is people we want to help, right?
How can we do that without forming a relationship? Without sharing an inside story? Without personality?
Because people buy from people. Not from websites. Not a program/package/product.
People buy from people.
What are people actually buying from you? What result? What feeling?
And they are buying from YOU, not your website.
If you want to influence your potential customer … do it on a real level. Being YOU. Sharing something personal about you. That is connection or relationship on a real deal level. That can’t be copy-catted.
And that isn’t necessarily about telling people that you went to the park. Boring! But more about how in primary school you were petrified of talking to kids and making new friends at parks and building confidence in your boyfriends daughter is soooo important to you.
Social awkwardness, anxiety and childhood issues. Who can put up their hands? Relatable, showing personality and a deeper meaning to business and life. This what we are all looking for in life, isn’t it?
That is real and speaks to us on a human level.
If you want to influence, inspire and motivate people? Do it on a real deal level.
Why I Do What I Do (My Why)
This article was first published here.
Why we do that we do? What is the motivation… What puts fire in our belly. To me, it is about understanding different personality types.
(Oh, and as mentioned in the video, here is the link to the Selfish Bitch email.)
My Why
First, (and most importantly), I love cake.
Full stop. I do what I do for the love of cake, chocolate and all things sweet. It is an addiction of cupcakes, that has left me with many sleep less night and something I can not give up.
Don’t make me, I’ll cry. (Seriously.)
I am a ‘’How To’’ gal.
My methodical, Capricornian brain only works in logical steps – 1 2 3 4 5. You jumble that up & I loose my shit. But in that systematic brain, I come up with lists, templates, guides and instructions on getting stuff done.
Examples of exact, consice instructions are courses, workshops, videos, blog and Blog Business School. Everything needs to be in an order. Special, huh?
I love helping. People.
A helper from way back, as a middle (female) child, growing up with a brother with a disability, being a support worker for years and training cake business.
It is was I am naturally good at and enjoy. When you add Helping + Systems = Confidence Boost.
I am a kinda bossy boots.
I like telling people what to do. I don’t know if I have always been like that (was kinda a shy, quiet kid) but when I found myself, in my 30’s, mind you! I freaking knew my shit.
My life experience was pretty crazy (fun) and telling people what has worked and not worked in my business kinda makes sense to me. Hell, if someone could have helped me not make as many mistakes!
I trust my intuition.
We all have something we need to trust and I believe if we trust and believe in ourselves, we will never be let down.
Not only that, add a little bit of pixie dust (kinda like women’s intuition) and I have an unwavering belief. That I know this is my path. This is exactly where I am meant to be.
I am strong. And a little controversial.
I know who I am and why I am on this planet. I have thoughts, feelings and opinions (just like everyone else). And I will express them.
I have learnt to stand up for myself, and stand up for others.
I have learnt what is acceptable behaviour and what isn’t.
I have learned what my boundaries are and what to do when people cross them.
(Side note – I am not a drama creating person. I don’t say something to stir the pot. It’s just not my style.)
