What tips or advice do I wish someone had told me before starting my blog. This gets asked a lot in Facebook groups.
I don’t believe blogging is easy and I also don’t believe in saying that starting a blog is easy.
All of those articles out there ‘how to start a blog in 3 easy steps’ or ‘5 minute tutorial on a published blog!’.
No. no.
Don’t get me wrong. You can have a blog’ live’ in 5 minutes. But it will be rubbish. Let alone if you have an objective of monetising (making money) from it.
A blog or online business takes concerted effort and energy and time over a long period of time. Like anything worthwhile.
3 Tips I Wish I Had Been Given When Starting a Blog
#1. Start.
Just start. There is no time like the present. Imagine in 1 years time, 2 years time, 5 years time if you had started now or not started?
I hate the thought or idea of living life with regret and ‘imagine’ if I started a blog earlier.
When is the time to start? NOW.
Why? So you can start making mistakes, start stuffing up and start learning and growing. So you can figure out your blogging, writing and content creation style. And then improve it.
Start. Now. Not in 5 years. Do it.
#2. Go for it.
What do you have to loose?
Fear of failure is what holds so many people back (you are not alone).
Imagine your child has a running + hurdle race at school. Would you tell them not to bother trying, because they will probably land flat on their face and might come 8th, so it isn’t worth trying?
Yep, that same analogy. For you. Your blog. Exactly the same. (Just to be clear, there will be hurdles, you may trip and fall, you may not get first) but you still need to be in the game (see #3).
Go for it!
#3. It is worth it. I promise.
It is hard work (I will promise you that) but is worth it.
My favourite sayings are ”Entrepreneurs work like others are not willing to, to live a life that only others dream of’.
I read a stat that over 80% of bloggers never make more than $100 USD. Why? Because they give up.
If you are a ‘give up’ type personality, then blogging isn’t (probably) for you.
And I have thought about giving up. Approximately 365 million times. But I promise you, it does get easier. Allow yourself to trip and fall. And choose to LEARN from those mistakes. Nowadays, I earn over $7,000 per month from my blog. And retired my boyfriend from his job. Saving for a 2nd house + farm.
It is worth it. I promise.

Hi, Rebekah! I just read through your tips for new bloggers – and yes, I’m inspired. 😉 I would love to learn more about how you’ve become a successful blogger and business woman through blogging! I’ve been at the blogging project for about 7 months, and it’s been so rewarding! But I’m certainly not making a cent of money, and in fact, I spend $11-12 per month for my domain name, http://www.thawingout.org
Anyway, I may be come back for more ideas, and want to thank you for what you’ve shared in this post! Keep it up.
Hi Anna, thanks for commenting. How are you trying to monetise your blog? I just clicked through and I can’t see what monetising strategies are in place. Also, a domain name should only cost about $15 per year, not per month. Perhaps that is website hosting per month?
